Golf Digest Ranks Caledonia Golf & Fish Club Among America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses

Mike Strantz Masterpiece is a Consensus Top 100 Layout and Myrtle Beach’s Most Popular Course

Pawleys Island, S.C. – Golf Digest unveiled its biennial list of America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses in the June issue of the magazine, and a familiar name retained its place among the nation’s elite layouts. Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, Myrtle Beach’s most popular course, was 86th on the prestigious list.

The late Mike Strantz’s first solo design, Caledonia has been on seven of the last eight iterations of the Golf Digest list and is a consensus top 100 public layout. The course is No. 29 on Golf Magazine’s list of the Top 100 You Can Play and Golf Channel travel guru Matt Ginella ranked it No. 14 on his list of the nation’s top 50 public courses.

“Our goal every day is to provide the best experience possible at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club,” said Bob Seganti, director of operations at Caledonia. “With that in mind, it’s extremely rewarding to be ranked among America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses by Golf Digest. The honor is a testament to dedication of everyone at the course – from the bag drop to the pro shop and our superintendent and his tireless staff.”

Caledonia, which is equal parts art and architecture, plays through a stunning piece of lowcountry land that was once home to a thriving rice plantation. The live oak trees draped in Spanish moss, the marshy waters of the Waccamaw Neck, and Strantz’s architectural brilliance combined to make Caledonia one of America’s premier public golf experiences.

A round at Caledonia concludes at the iconic 18th hole, which requires golfers to carry water on the approach to a green the rests in the shadow of an antebellum clubhouse. A crowd is typically gathered on the clubhouse deck, enjoying the drink of their choice, and providing a gallery at the conclusion of an unforgettable round.

Golf Channel’s travel guru Matt Ginella wrote of the course, “I could never imagine a trip to Myrtle and not heading down to Pawleys Island to play Caledonia Golf & Fish Club.”

In addition to providing a premier golf course, Caledonia continues to deliver tremendous value, particularly when packaged with its sister course, True Blue Golf Club.

The Sizzlin’ Summer Special, which can be booked at exclusive rates through Caledonia Golf Vacations, is a 2-night, 3-round deal that includes golf at both True Blue and Caledonia and it starts at $339. Given that True Blue is No 77 on the Golf Magazine list and Ginella ranks it 41st on his list, the Sizzlin’ Summer deal is as full of quality and value as any summer golf package in America.

Everything about True Blue is big – the fairways, the greens and most of all, the fun. Strantz used waste bunkers, which frame many of the course’s fairways, to craft a layout that is among the Myrtle Beach area’s most visually stunning.

Man-O-War’s 15th hole ranks among GOLF Magazine’s “Five Most Memorable Island Greens” alongside No. 17 at TPC Sawgrass, the “Alcatraz” hole at PGA West’s Stadium Course and Coeur d’Alene Resort’s movable, floating putting surface. The Witch is praised by PGA.com for presenting one of America’s “great ninth holes” and The Wizard has earned 4-1/2 stars from Golf Digest.

Through Sept. 6, the three-day Gold Package starts as low as $99 (per person, per day, taxes included).  It includes three rounds with cart on each of the much-admired Mystical Golf layouts (plus one complimentary round), three nights’ lodging in well-appointed three-bedroom villa (four beds), free iHOP breakfast daily (available 24 hours per day), and a gratis steak dinner at Logan’s Roadhouse (includes non-alcoholic beverages, taxes).

Both stay-and-plays offer one complimentary golfer for booked groups of 20 or more players.

“Simply put, we offer the best stay-and-play packages in the U.S.,” says Claude Pardue, President and CEO. “Our three courses continue to draw nothing but raves from our first-time guests, loyal repeat customers returning year after year and the major golf media.”

Man-O-War is revered for its back-to-back island greens and water features touching every hole.  With a commanding 141 slope rating, the par-72, 6,967-yard layout is offset by straight-forward shots and excellent, bent-grass greens.

Kiawah Island Golf Resort to Renovate Turtle Point Golf Course in 2016

Nicklaus Design to consult on the renovation starting January 4 with scheduled reopening in early October

Kiawah Island, SC, (December 21, 2015) – The Jack Nicklaus-designed Turtle Point Golf Course on Kiawah Island Golf Resort will closed on January 4, 2016 for a nine-month renovation. The Nicklaus Design team has been hired to consult on the renovations.  Jack Nicklaus surveyed the course in late October with other members of Nicklaus Design and made recommendations for changes.

According to Brian Gerard, Kiawah’s Director of Golf, in addition to the design changes the tees, fairways and greens will be converted to Paspalum, the salt-tolerant strain of grass that is currently in The Ocean Course, Osprey Point and Oak Point on Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Nicklaus has prepared plans for rebuilding all 18 greens including moving five greens due to shade issues and to expand fairway sizes from 20 acres to 34 acres.

“We’ll be adding new tees on multiple holes and raise a number of the tee boxes,” said Gerard.  “Additionally, we plan to add a pond to the par-3 seventh hole and expand the pond on the par-5 second hole and move the green to the right, behind it to change the second and third shot into that green.” he said.

“One of the most exciting change will be on the oceanfront sixteenth hole.  On this par-3, the tee box will be moved away from the dunes so the player will be hitting his tee shot with the Atlantic Ocean in the background.”

In addition to the course design changes, crews will work around the ponds and wooded areas of the course reclaiming overgrowth, the entire irrigation system on the golf course will be rebuilt and work done on the maintenance building as well as building a new pump house.

According to Roger Warren, President of Kiawah Island Golf Resort, “The goal is to both improve the conditioning of the golf course and make the experience more fun. When we get done people will be excited because it will feel like a totally new golf course.”

During the renovation, the golf school, which is located at the Tommy Cuthbert Golf Learning Center adjacent to Turtle Point’s driving range, will be held at other resort courses. Tomasso, Turtle Point’s Italian restaurant, and the pro shop will remain open throughout the renovation.

Located along 10 miles of pristine beach just south of Charleston, SC, Kiawah Island Golf Resort is rated as one of the country’s top resorts by Golf Magazine, Golf Digest andConde Nast Traveler magazines.
