Pinehurst Resort to Debut Gil Hanse Reimagination of No. 4 on Sept. 20

Pinehurst Resort to Debut Gil Hanse Reimagination of No. 4 on Sept. 20

(PINEHURST, N.C.) – Pinehurst Resort & Country Club will unveil a completely reimagined No. 4 course on Sept. 20, the work of renowned golf course architect Gil Hanse.

Visually stunning from tee to green, exposed sand areas, vast cross bunkers and native wire grass meld with the site’s rolling topography and natural ridge lines to create dramatic vistas and strategic options on every hole. Hanse’s design of No. 4 is a brand new and bold expression of pure, timeless Carolinas Sandhills golf.

“We’ve returned the original landscape to the course, and from there, we then created the features, slopes and green locations,” says Hanse, architect of the 2016 Olympic Course in Rio de Janeiro. “We believe golfers are going to appreciate how No. 4 fits into the Pinehurst lineup and elevates the entire golf experience.”

The par-5 9th hole is a shining example of how No. 4 has been reinvented through Hanse’s vision and touch.  More than 25 pot bunkers are replaced with sprawling, sandy native areas, and a massive crossbunker spans the width of the fairway, connecting with nearby holes and tying together the natural landforms. Green complexes throughout the course have been lowered to fit the landscape, and are complemented by Hanse’s unique bunker designs.

“Among Pinehurst’s nine golf courses, No. 4 has always held a special place in the resort’s history,” says Bob Dedman, Jr., in speaking for the Dedman family, the owners of the resort. “We entrusted Gil and his team to interpret and execute the vision of making No. 4 more natural and authentic to the Sandhills of North Carolina. Gil, Jim and the team have been great to work with and have far exceeded our expectations.”

The USGA has already named No. 4, along with No. 2, as co-hosts for the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship. It marks the third time the prestigious event will be played at Pinehurst and the first since 2008. Stroke play will be contested on both courses with the match play championship held on No. 2. Hanse says this is exactly the type of symbiotic relationship that should exist between the two courses.

“No. 4 is a companion in the landscape, but it is not a tribute to No. 2 in the features,” Hanse says. “The greens are different, the approaches are different and we wanted to take advantage of the landforms, which are much more dramatic than those on No. 2.”

Completion of No. 4 is bittersweet for Hanse, who spent parts of the past two years onsite with partner Jim Wagner and his construction crew, “The Cavemen,” working both on No. 4 and Pinehurst’s short course, The Cradle.  He describes living in the Dornoch Cottage – Donald Ross’s home in Pinehurst – as “one of the most meaningful things that has ever happened to me.”

The reimagination of No. 4 is the latest in a series of bold moves for one of the world’s most iconic golf destinations. The restoration of No. 2, acquisition of No. 9, the opening of The Cradle and an expansion of the 18-hole putting course Thistle Dhu are complete, as are restorative enhancements to Pinehurst No. 3. The Pinehurst Brewing Company will open this fall, located in the village’s historic steam plant.

“There’s never been a more exciting time to visit Pinehurst,” says Tom Pashley, President of Pinehurst Resort. “All of the recent changes and enhancements have resulted in a new energy level and fun factor that’s contagious. I can’t wait for visitors to see the stunning transformation with the new Pinehurst No. 4.”

From Donald Ross to America’s Longest Running Mini-Tour Event, Daytona Beach Has A Rich Golf History

Daytona Beach, Fla. — Daytona Beach is a national destination, attracting vacationers from across the country to attend NASCAR races and take a drive on the area’s famed beaches. What people are less familiar with is Daytona Beach’s rich golf history.

Golfers know the area as the home of the LPGA’s headquarters and, of course, LPGA International, a highly acclaimed 36-hole facility, but Daytona Beach has been attracting players for more than 100 years.

Here are three things you likely didn’t know about Daytona Beach’s long-standing ties to the game.

— Donald Ross, who was born in Scotland before later becoming an American citizen, is widely regarded as America’s most important golf course architect. He designed Pinehurst No. 2, Oakland Hills, East Lake Golf Club and Seminole Golf Club, among many other high profile layouts. Ross also left his mark in Volusia County, designing the South Course at Daytona Beach Golf Club and New Smyrna Golf Club. Like many Ross designs, the challenge at the South Course lies in the greens complexes. New Smyrna, which opened in 1953, is the “new” Ross course. Boasting outstanding year-round conditions, it is one of the area’s hidden gems.

— When it comes to competitive golf, Daytona Beach is, understandably, closely associated with the LPGA Tour, but did you know the area is home to golf’s longest running mini-tour event – the Riviera Open? Riviera Country Club has hosted the tournament since 1960 and future PGA Tour champions are among the event’s past champions, including 7-time Tour winner Bert Yancey, Morris Hatalsky, and Billy Hurley III.

— Spruce Creek Country Club isn’t just a quality William Amick designed golf course, it’s the centerpiece of America’s largest fly-in community. That’s right, Spruce Creek is built around what used to be a U.S. Navy landing strip during World War II. Playing the eighth and ninth holes you might have a plane just a couple hundred feet over your head, adding an adrenaline rush to your quest to make birdie.

The Great American Race and the World’s Most Famous Beach are Daytona Beach’s calling cards, but the area has plenty to offer golfers in search of a memorable of trip.

With rounds of 75, 66 and 72, the 28-year-old Floridian co-led the tournament going in to the final round, and displaying continued precision, discipline and determination, scored five birdies in a final round of 68.

Following his final round, Brooks Koepka, said: “It’s incredible. I’ve looked at all these names a million times and to have my name on this trophy is very special. I’m truly honoured to go back-to-back.”

Having co-led at the 54-hole stage, fellow Testimonee Daniel Berger ended the tournament tied sixth, recording his second career top-10 in a Major.

The Ashford Short Course scheduled for August opening

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. – (May 24, 2018): The newest addition to the award-winning golf offerings at The Greenbrier and The Greenbrier Sporting Club will follow in the tradition of excellence that has become synonymous with America’s Resort, but it will also provide a fresh and unique option for today’s modern golfer.

Scheduled for an August  2018 opening, The Ashford Short Course at The Greenbrier Sporting Club will be a walking-only 9-hole loop of par 3 holes ranging from 56 to 112 yards in length. The holes will pay tribute to revered architects and courses around the world and provide a relaxed family environment that will be entertaining for golfers of all levels and abilities.

Available for both members of The Greenbrier Sporting Club and guests of The Greenbrier, the newest golf offering will perfectly complement the courses already in place – The Old White TPC, which hosts The Greenbrier Classic annually, the redesigned Meadows Course, which features signature stacked sod bunkers, and The Snead Course, an award-winning Tom Fazio design exclusive to members of The Greenbrier Sporting Club.

“The Greenbrier is known around the world for first-class golf, and this is just another example of our commitment to giving guests what they desire,” said Robert Harris, Vice President of Golf at The Greenbrier. “The Ashford will provide an opportunity for something new and different on days where guests and members just don’t have time to play 18 holes. We’re incredibly excited to add The Ashford to The Greenbrier collection.”

In addition to providing a place for beginners to learn the game or an experienced golfer to work out the rust in his or her short game, the course will host unique events like night golf and closest to the pin contests.

The new course’s name, The Ashford Short Course, pays tribute to the rich history at The Greenbrier and remembers a unique moment in The Greenbrier’s more than 240-year past.

In 1942, the historic resort was sold to the United States Army, and it became a hospital for sick and wounded soldiers during World War II. Named for Army physician Col. Bailey K. Ashford, Ashford General Hospital treated more than 25,000 soldiers from 1942 through 1946. It employed 45 doctors, 100 nurses and 500 enlisted men, along with hundreds of volunteers. The recovering servicemen benefited by using The Greenbrier’s immaculate facilities – including the pool, the golf courses and the tennis courts – during their recovery.

“We’re incredibly proud of our history at The Greenbrier, and we want to do all we can to make sure it isn’t lost,” said Dr. Jill Justice, President, The Greenbrier. “The Ashford name honors the men and women who spent time here in service to this great country, and it fits perfectly on this exciting new course.”

Set in the valley floor with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, the course will be accompanied by seven new home sites for members of The Greenbrier Sporting Club.

“With its close proximity to the Members Lodge, the course is convenient for all of our members before or after lunch or dinner or anytime they have a little extra time,” said Larry Klein, Vice President and General Manager of The Greenbrier Sporting Club. “We can’t wait for everyone to try it.”

Combining golf and socialising across a 4 hour experience, WGD events are designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of women and girls. With over 15 million social media impressions using #womensgolfday last year expectations are riding high for June 5th 2018 to be an incredible day for the women’s game.

Elisa Gaudet, founder of Women’s Golf Day is excited for the 2018 events to get underway, she said, “WGD started as a passion project in 2016. There was enough talk about encouraging more women into the game, what we needed was an action plan that was relatable to women and worked for venues. Now on the verge of the third annual day I am enormously proud of how this has developed into a movement and how we are fulfilling on our Women’s Golf Day mission to engage, empower and support one another using golf as the vehicle. So many wonderful people and organisations have thrown their support behind WGD, proof positive “it takes a village.”  We’ve got venues around the world participating on June 5th and we look forward to welcoming as many women as possible. We would like everyone to know they are welcome and to give golf and Women’s Golf Day a try.”

New venues have signed up all over the world for 2018 with 37 Topgolf locations across the U.S. being the latest to throw their support behind WGD. If a Topgolf isn’t in reach then there are golf courses and PGA Superstores all across the U.S. taking part too. Virtually every golf playing nation in the world is involved in WGD 2018, so if you want to perfect your putting in Puerto Rico, play with friends and family in France or encourage someone to take their first ever swing in Sweden, visit www.womensgolfday.com to find your nearest venue and take part in the biggest celebration of Women & Girls’ golf in the world.

Arccos Golf Launches Next-Generation Artificial Intelligence Platform

Arccos Golf Launches Next-Generation Artificial Intelligence Platform, Arccos Caddie 2.0, Powered by Microsoft Azure

Golf’s Smartest Caddie Now Provides Real-Time Guidance on Every Shot,
Helping Users Play Smarter to Shoot Lower Scores

STAMFORD, Conn., May 24, 2018 – Arccos Golf today announced the release of its next-generation artificial intelligence platform, Arccos Caddie 2.0, which now provides players with real-time strategies for every shot on any hole in the world. Powered by Microsoft Azure, Arccos Caddie has also been made a free feature for all users of the Arccos 360 system.

Recently honored among the “World’s Most Innovative Companies 2018” by Fast Company, ranking #3 in the Sports category, Arccos boasts the golf industry’s richest data set. This includes over 100 million shots hit during 1 million rounds played by the Arccos community, and 418 million GPS mapping data points on 40,000+ courses worldwide. Through a series of hackfests and other collaborations, these resources were harnessed by Arccos engineers and Microsoft’s world class A.I. scientists. The result is a significant expansion of Arccos Caddie’s capabilities.

“The entire sports landscape is being revolutionized by advanced analytics, and golf is the most ideal sport for the application of these concepts,” said Sal Syed, Arccos CEO and Co-Founder. “Working with Microsoft, we’re plugging into a very traditional framework – the caddie/player relationship – and taking it to the next level through the power of A.I. Considering only 3% of golfers today have access to advice from a human caddie, we’re also helping democratize the caddie experience by making it available to anyone.”

Arccos Caddie 2.0 uses a wide variety of inputs to provide a golfer with real-time insights into their optimal and alternative strategies, as well as outcome predictions, for every shot they play. Factors considered include but are not limited to:

  • A user’s shot history
  • The historical performance of other Arccos users
  • Wind speed/direction and other weather conditions
  • Elevation changes
  • Hole geometry
  • Hazard locations

“The PGA TOUR has done a great job of using advanced analytics to help its players practice and perform their best,” said Mike Downey, Director, Principal Evangelist – Sports at Microsoft. “At other levels of the game, capturing the necessary on-course data has been a real challenge. Arccos has cracked that code and built a robust data set which they’re deploying via the Microsoft Azure cloud to the benefit of golfers worldwide.”

Winner of the Golf Digest Editor’s Choice Award for “Best Game Analyzer” three years running, the Arccos platform helps golfers of all skill levels play smarter to shoot lower scores. In 2017, Arccos users improved their handicap by an average of 3.55 strokes – a rate that’s 46.7x faster than the average player with a USGA handicap.

“Arccos Caddie demonstrates A.I. complementing human capability,” added Steve Guggenheimer, Corporate Vice President – A.I. Business at Microsoft. “Through the power of Microsoft Azure, amateur golfers have information at their fingertips that was not easily available before. A.I. will have a huge effect on the golf industry, and it is an exciting time to be in this space as we help Arccos lead the charge.”

In addition to Microsoft, Arccos is an official partner with Cobra Puma Golf, which recently launched golf’s first smart set, Cobra Connect Powered by Arccos. As part of this ongoing collaboration, every club in the Cobra KING F8 line features an Arccos sensor embedded in the grip. This helps players improve faster by automatically tracking and receiving actionable insights for every aspect of their game.
