Tanglewood Park Golf Course Reopens After RTJ II “Refresh”

Robert Trent Jones Jr. updates his father’s public course, host of’74 PGA Championship

The Championship Course at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, North Carolina—a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design that hosted the 1974 PGA Championship and the 1986 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship—reopened last Saturday after five months of implementing major portions of a long-range golf course refinements master plan prepared by Jones Sr.’s son, Robert Trent Jones Jr., Chairman and Master Architect of Robert Trent Jones II (RTJ II) Golf Course Architects.

The master plan, prepared at the request of the Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department, called for refinements to many elements of the golf course, notably all bunkers, tees, tree management, and resurfacing the greens with new turf.

“The changes are outstanding,” reports Michael Wilcox, Tanglewood Park’s Director of Golf. “The updated playability, strategy, and picturesque vistas will create a unique and memorable golf experience. Once the newly grassed areas are fully established, the Championship Course will once again be one of the premier public courses in the U.S. A new chapter at Tanglewood has begun.”

“I give the officials in the Forsyth County government a big standing ovation for realizing the tremendous asset that the Championship Course at Tanglewood Park represents to their County Parks System,” says Bruce Charlton, President and Chief Design Officer of RTJ II. “Our intent was to update the course in keeping with the RTJ Sr.’s design philosophies while polishing this gem to meet the demands of today’s game. It has been a pleasure implementing our visions in collaboration with Richard Mandell, an ASGCA member based in Pinehurst, N.C.”

Both Wilcox and Charlton noted the contributions of course superintendent Lee Barefoot, The Wadsworth Construction company led on this project by Matt Lohmann, and consultant Steve Johnson of Brown Golf Management.

ST. ANDREWS, Fife, Scotland (October 23, 2018) – Ewan McKay, Chairman of The Feddinch Club—the first and only private, residential member’s club with its own course in St. Andrews—confirmed today that several special developments have taken place to boost the appeal of membership.

Construction of The Feddinch Club course progresses, with much of the rough shaping now complete. Current work is concentrated on improving site boundary walls and directing surface water into newly created culverts and wetlands in out-of-play areas to enhance bio-diversity. This will be followed by mid-2019 completion of the rough shaping and installation of additional drainage and irrigation. The formal opening of the club is scheduled for Spring 2021.

Founder Member enrollment has been extended to Nov. 30, 2018. Those wishing to take advantage of the opportunity to enroll now only pay a 2.5% deposit, which remains in escrow until six months prior to opening, when the balance will be payable.

Enrollees enjoy special benefits including annual credits to be spent at the club along with:

    • Complimentary transfers from and to airports in Scotland and courses in the locale
    • 7 nights guaranteed accommodation annually for family use
    • The right to reserve 10 suite nights annually for unaccompanied guests
    • Entitlement to enter a ballot for accommodation during the week of The Open
    • Unlimited and complimentary play for spouse/partner and immediate offspring under age 30
    • Playing rights daily for up to seven golfers
    • The right to host an annual event for up to 24 participants
    • A personalized concierge service to take care of all requests
    • A gated entrance to maximize privacy and security and ensure total relaxation

Additional updates from The Feddinch Club include:

  • An agreement in principle has been reached with the local Kingsbarns Distillery for the production of a Feddinch-branded single malt whisky and a variety of gins that will be available in the clubhouse. Members of The Feddinch Club also will be able to purchase a consignment of the whisky in barrels and, upon maturation, have it personally labelled.
  • In homage to the great golf course designer Donald Ross, who studied under Old Tom Morris in St. Andrews before coming to America where he became one of the country’s foremost architects, a statue of Ross will be erected at The Feddinch Club and each of the 19 holes will be named after courses designed by him. To date, acceptances have been received from Seminole, Inverness, Scioto, Grosse Ile, Charlotte Country Club, and Wannamoisett.

2 Golf Outings Planned To Benefit Victims Of Hurricane Florence

2 Golf Outings Planned To Benefit Victims Of Hurricane Florence, Flooding Along The Grand Strand

FGI Offers Two Events For Area Golfers To Give Back To Employees, Community Who Were Impacted By Storm, Flooding Damage
October 16, 2018, Myrtle Beach, S.C. — Two golf courses owned by Founders Group International (FGI) will host golf outings benefiting the Aberdeen Country Club Community and FGI employees who were impacted by Hurricane Florence and the subsequent flooding.

Both outings — one at Founders Club in Pawleys Island and another at Long Bay Golf Club in Longs —provide opportunities to help those in need while playing a round of golf.

The first event will be the Founders Strong Golf Outing at 10 a.m. on October 30 at Founders Club in Pawleys Island. The tournament format is a four-person scramble. Proceeds from the event will go to FGI employees affected by the storm and flooding.

The cost is $60 per player. The entry fee includes a round of golf, lunch after the round and prizes. There will also be a 50/50 drawing and silent auction. Those interested in signing up should email their foursome to Tom Van Hoogen at Tom.Vanhoogen@FoundersGolf.com.

“Hearing about what people have lost and what they are going through is heartbreaking,” said Van Hoogen, general manager and head golf professional at both River Club and Founders Club. “It’s tough when you hear about and see homes with several feet of water in them. There have been many families in the Founders Group that have been affected by this storm. Employees from Longs down to Pawleys Island have suffered, and in this time of need, we want to come together and help our FGI family get their homes and lives put back together.

“During this tough time, the Myrtle Beach area has shown a lot of pride and determination in aiding our community in any way possible. Whether it is from donations, filling sand bags, or helping people move out of flooded homes, the people have really come together to help out.”

The second event is the Aberdeen Country Club Community Rebuilding Golf Outing, which will have a 10 a.m. shotgun start on November 3 at Long Bay Golf Club in Longs. All proceeds will benefit those in the Aberdeen Country Club Community impacted by the storm.

The cost to enter is $60 per golfer and the golf shop will also collect household items and additional monetary donations. The entry fee includes a round of golf and lunch after the round. There will also be a 50/50 drawing. To register a foursome, email Corey.Bowers@FoundersGolf.com.

“Aberdeen’s community took one of the hardest hits from the flooding,” said Corey Bowers, head golf pro and general manager of Aberdeen Country Club. “So much devastation to the community, with almost every house and condo having damage from the storm. At Aberdeen Country Club, a part of FGI, we want to do whatever we can to help show support for our community. So, we will do what we do best, which is hosting a golf event to raise money, household supplies and more. Anything to help our community rebuild.”

The fifth annual event will be played November 11-15 on 16 of Myrtle Beach’s best courses. A 72-hole, two-person team event, the Fall Classic initially planned to cap the field at 360 players but due to demand expanded to 432. Even with the increased field size, the tournament has been sold out for more than a month.

As part of its sponsorship, Short Par 4 will provide Fall Classic players with custom branded apparel, including a Greg Norman pullover.

“Short Par 4, which delivers great quality and value, is an ideal partner for the Fall Classic,” Tournament Director Scott Tomasello said. “The Fall Classic appeals to golfers who enjoy the best the game has to offer and it has been growing in popularity, much like Short Par 4. This is a partnership between a brand and an event that are on the rise, and it will be beneficial to both parties and our golfers.”

Teams will be flighted based on their USGA handicaps and there will be a different format of play each day. The tournament formats will be best ball, Texas scramble, modified alternate shot and a scramble, but the golf course lineup and entry fee of $375 have been the driving forces behind the event’s rapid growth.

The courses hosting the four-round event are the Dye and Fazio courses at Barefoot Resort, Farmstead Golf Links, Glen Dornoch, Heritage Club, Leopard’s Chase, Long Bay, Pawleys Plantation, Pine Lakes, Prestwick Country Club, Rivers Edge, Thistle, TPC Myrtle Beach, Tradition, True Blue and World Tour.

Tournament festivities will begin with a welcome reception at House of Blues on November 11, an event that will feature free hor d’oeuvres and two free drinks for each person.
