ORLANDO, March 22, 2018 – The Arnold Palmer Design Company, a golf course architecture firm under the Arnold Palmer Group, today announced in the spirit of its founder’s constant and never-ending pursuit of perfection, Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge will add an extensive two-acre short game facility and make improvements to the driving range following the 2018 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard.

The initial enhancements will start with the short-game facility and will feature four greens of varying shapes and sizes along with a collection of bunkers built to different depths and design styles to simulate on-course scenarios. For an image, click here.

“It is important for us to design a facility that showcases on-course scenarios not only found at Bay Hill, but other situations players would find when playing at other top clubs around the world,” said Brandon Johnson, APDC architect and vice president. “The new short game area will allow members and guests to get lost in their practice sessions honing basic shots or experimenting with a variety of recovery shots that incorporate flat pitch slopes, nobs, false fronts, backboards and various bunkers styles.”

To make way for the short game facility expansion, the ninth hole on the Charger Course will be redesigned into an exciting drivable par four. In addition, the Championship Course will get a new state-of-the-art irrigation system installed. This new system will allow the superintendent to manage water outputs more efficiently and accurately resulting in firmer, faster playing conditions on healthier turf grass.

Dick’s Sporting Goods Relaunches Iconic Tommy Armour Golf Brand

PITTSBURGH (March 15, 2018) – DICK’S Sporting Goods (NYSE: DKS), the largest U.S.-based, full-line omni-channel sporting goods retailer, announced today the relaunch of the iconic Tommy Armour golf brand, with a renewed focus on innovative golf club technology that promotes both forgiveness and distance. WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. – (March 15, 2018): The 105th season of golf on The Old White TPC Course at The Greenbrier officially begins on Friday, March 30, with a special ceremony to mark the historic occasion.

Commencing at 10 a.m., on the iconic first tee, the ceremony includes some anecdotes on the course’s storied past from The Greenbrier historian Dr. Robert Conte, as well as a question and answer session. A ceremonial first ball of the season follows Conte’s remarks, before tee times officially begin for 2018.

“The Old White TPC has an amazing story to tell, and it is a significant part of golf history in the United States,” said Dr. Jill Justice, President, The Greenbrier. “We’re excited about another year of golf on this treasured classic.”

Originally designed and constructed by Charles Blair Macdonald and Seth Raynor in 1914, The Old White TPC was named for the well known Old White Hotel, which stood on the resort grounds from 1858 through 1922.

Macdonald, the father of American golf course architecture, modeled several holes from some of the most famous throughout Europe. The 8th Hole was styled after the “Redan” at North Berwick, the 13th after the “Alps” at Prestwick and the 15th after the “Eden” at St. Andrews. His associate, Seth Raynor, assisted in the course construction and returned in the 1920s to oversee updates to the golf course.

Through the years, the course has played host to legendary golfers like Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino, as well as presidents and celebrities from the world of sports and entertainment.

Since 2010, The Old White TPC has been the host of The Greenbrier Classic, an annual PGA TOUR FedEx Cup event, making it the oldest course on the PGA TOUR. Past champions include Stuart Appleby, Scott Stallings, Ted Potter Jr., Jonas Blixt, Angel Cabrera, Danny Lee and Xander Schauffele. A who’s who list of the best golfers in the world have participated in the tournament, including Tom Watson, Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson, John Daly and many others. After sustaining substantial damage from flood waters in June of 2016, forcing the cancellation of The 2016 Greenbrier Classic less than a month later, The Old White TPC reopened in July of 2017 just in time for the tournament, fully restored by noted golf course architect Keith Foster. By fully embracing the original Macdonald/Raynor elements, the course has been overwhelmingly received by PGA TOUR players and guests alike. Golf Digest named The Old White TPC the Best Restoration of 2017. It was also named one of America’s 100 Best Public Courses by that same publication.

The 2018 golf season on The Old White TPC runs from March 30 through November 26 and is closed only for needed maintenance and preparations for The Greenbrier Classic. This United States Golf Association (USGA) National Championship will begin staged on The Broadmoor East Course Monday, June 25 through Sunday, July 1. The Senior Open will serve as the capstone event of The Broadmoor’s year-long Centennial Celebration.

U.S. Senior Open Updates:

The 39th U.S. Senior Open, conducted by the United States Golf Association, and to be held June 25-July 1, 2018 at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo., will feature a field of 156 of the world’s best professional and amateur senior golfers (over the age of 50). Players who are eligible to compete include Fred Couples, Kenny Perry, Bernhard Langer, Vijay Singh, Steve Stricker and Tom Watson. John Elway, who has led the Denver Broncos to Super Bowl victories as both a player and a general manager, is serving as 2018 U.S. Senior Open honorary chairman. This U.S. Senior Open will be the eighth USGA Championship held at The Broadmoor. Fox Network will provide live television coverage of all four rounds of the championship.

35th Annual Tournament Expects to Attract 3,000+ Golfers to Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The 35th annual World Amateur Handicap Championship will begin accepting entries Tuesday, March 13. A 72-hole, net stroke play tournament, the World Am will be played August 27-31 on 64 of Myrtle Beach’s best courses.

Early entry into the event, which includes at least four rounds of golf, nightly admission to the World’s Largest 19th Hole and a gift bag, is $525 through May 17, a $100 savings off the regular cost. The tournament, which flights players based on age, gender and handicap, is open to all golfers 18 years of age or older.

Players that register by April 12 will be eligible to win one of the 50 random drawing prizes collectively valued at $10,000, including ClubGlove travel bags, PeakVision sunglasses, TaylorMade drivers, putters and wedges, and more.

More than 3,000 players from across America and more than 20 countries are again expected to participate in amateur golf’s most inclusive event.

Players are flighted into nine divisions – men 49 and under, senior men (50-59), mid-senior men (60-69), super senior men (70-79), seasoned seniors (80+), women 49 and under, the gross division, senior (50+) gross division. There is also a “Just For Fun” flight, created for players who want to enjoy the World Am experience without the pressure of competition.

After four days of competition, all flight winners and ties advance to the World Championship Playoff, an 18-hole shootout that crowns the event’s winner.

While the competition is initially what lures players to this bucket list event, it’s only part of what keeps them coming back. At the heart of the World Am’s appeal is the camaraderie among its participants and much of that kinship is fostered at the World’s Largest 19th Hole.

Each night of the event, the 19th Hole overtakes all 120,000-square feet of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, providing participants with free food and drinks, live entertainment, celebrity guest appearances, a golf expo and more.

Among the big names that have appeared at the 19th Hole in recent years are David Feherty, Brandel Chamblee, Charlie Rymer and John Daly.

Mesquite, Nev. – During the last week of May, Mesquite Gaming – owner of the Casablanca Resort and Virgin River Hotel, celebrates its 16th anniversary of the Mesquite Amateur, the second largest handicapped amateur tournament in the nation,May 28 through June 1. The five-day 54-hole, net, stroke play tournament allows competitors to play 3 rounds of tournament golf on some of Mesquite’s scenic and award-winning courses. Registration is now open with early-bird pricing at $525 per player when you register by March 31.
