PGA National Resort & Spa Unveils Dramatic New ‘Bear Trap’ Statue

PGA National Resort & Spa Unveils Dramatic New ‘Bear Trap’ Statue

(PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.)PGA National Resort & Spa, host of the PGA TOUR’s upcoming Honda Classic played Feb. 23 – 26, has unveiled a dramatic new statue honoring its famous Jack Nicklaus-designed “Bear Trap” on its acclaimed Champion Course.

A replica of the iconic snarling Bear statue that welcomes (and warns) players on the mighty Champion layout that they are now entering one of the most difficult three-hole stretches in the game (holes No. 15 through 17), noted Wyoming sculptor Ben Foster created the new seven-foot, 700-pound ursine design from the same mold as the original.

The new statue, called “The Glare of the Bear,” stands sentinel at the front of the resort. Revealed just in time for the multitudes descending on the resort to enjoy the Honda Classic, all spectators and resort guests are welcome to snap group photos and selfies with the roaring grizzly fashioned out of silicone bronze.

“I looked through many, many wildlife photos to make sure to capture the aggression of a big mature grizzly in its natural habitat,” says Foster. “It was really something else sculpting this.”

“Taking a picture at The Bear Trap is one of the most popular activities at our resort, but the original is usually accessible only for our members and guests playing the Champion Course,” says Greg Saunders, Vice President, Managing Director. “This magnificent new bear statue residing at our front entrance gives everyone the opportunity to capture this iconic memory offered here at PGA National.”

The Champion Course is regarded as one of the top layouts in the U.S. The Bear Trap is hailed by USA Today as “one of the toughest stretches in golf,” and is known to strike fear into the hearts of golfers, professional and amateur alike. In last year’s Honda Classic, tournament winner Adam Scott took a 37-hole, bogey-free streak into the Bear Trap before making a quadruple seven on the par-3 15th. Needing to avoid a similar late-round meltdown on Sunday, Scott stayed dry on Nos. 15 and 17 on his way to a one-shot victory over Sergio Garcia.

Teeth of the Dog Golf course

The Pete Dye Designed Course at Casa de Campo Resort & Villas is
Consistently Ranked Among the Best Courses in Latin America
LA ROMANA, D.R. (February 15, 2017)  Casa de Campo Resort & Villas is in good company after Teeth of the Dog was named the #9 “Best Caribbean Golf Course” in USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice travel awards after the Pete Dye designed course was nominated by Caribbean golf experts and ultimately voted on by USA TODAY readers.
A panel of experts partnered with 10Best editors to pick the initial 20 nominees, and the top 10 winners were determined by popular vote in various categories. Experts Liliana Erasmus (10Best), Alan Hale (GolfThere), Melanie Reffes, and Larry Olmsted (Forbes.com) were chosen based on their expertise of golf travel and the Caribbean region.
Opened in 1971, Teeth of the Dog was the first Dominican Republic course to use the sea to dramatic effect, putting it on the global golfing map. Its name derives from the jagged rock formations jutting into the Caribbean on which Dye placed tees and greens. Three of its four par-3 holes play over waves to the greens. In total, it has seven holes next to the sea and 11 with ocean views.
“We’re incredibly proud to be named amongst the best Caribbean golf courses by the experts and readers of USA TODAY,” said Andres Pichardo, president of Casa de Campo Resort & Villas. “Casa de Campo takes pride in its collection of three golf courses designed by famed golf architect Pete Dye, especially Teeth of the Dog, which is consistently ranked as one of the best in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
Up next at Teeth of the Dog is the 13th Annual Spring Shootout, an annual favorite at Casa de Campo and en event that has become the most popular spring event in the Caribbean. The tournament is a 54-hole stroke play tournament using Stableford Scoring with net and gross divisions in each flight. The Shootout will be played on the Teeth of the Dog, the remodeled Links and Dye Fore. The men’s field will be divided evenly into five flights and the ladies will do battle within three evenly divided flights according to handicaps. A minimum of 20% of the players in each flight including the net and gross winners will compete in a shootout on Saturday afternoon. The shootout will be played on the Teeth of the Dog. A number of players will be eliminated on each hole until we end up with two men and two ladies. These four players will play number 9 on the Teeth of the Dog until we crown an overall man and lady champion.
All Readers’ Choice winners can be found at 10Best.com – a standalone travel media site – that is promoted across USA TODAY Travel Media Group’s digital and mobile products. The website provides users with original, unbiased, and experiential travel content of top attractions, things to see and do, and restaurants for top destinations in the U.S. and around the world. 10Best.com, acquired by USA TODAY in January 2013, averages 5 million visitors per month.

“We are honored to partner with Bunkers in Baghdad to recycle our golf balls, clubs and turf and provide our military troops with a fun way to relax during their leisure time,” said Topgolf Entertainment Group Co-Chairman and CEO Erik Anderson. “We’ve received photos and notes from troops stationed all over the world using our equipment, and it’s a privilege to share a small piece of Topgolf with these soldiers who are bravely serving our country.”

“The idea behind Bunkers in Baghdad is simple: we collect and ship golf equipment to our troops and vets around the world. Bunkers is busier than ever, and our partnership with Topgolf was really a blessing last year,” said Joe Hanna, founder of Bunkers in Baghdad. “Our troops truly appreciate anything we send them – especially a little slice of home. The majority of feedback we hear from our soldiers is, ‘Thank you for not forgetting about us.’”

About Topgolf

“Whose ball went farther?” That simple question, asked out of age-old sibling rivalry, motivated twin brothers Steve and Dave Jolliffe to invent the world’s first microchipped golf ball. The ball was the genesis for Topgolf games in which players aim for giant dartboard-like targets on an outfield and get instant feedback on the accuracy and distance of their shots. Today, Topgolf is inspiring people of all ages and skill levels – even non-golfers – to come together for playful competition. Topgolf also brings interactive experiences to the community that facilitate shared moments and deep relationships through Topgolf U golf lessons, weekly leagues, The Topgolf Tour competition, KidZone parties, social and corporate team-building events, and the World Golf Tour (WGT) app. Each venue features high-tech, climate-controlled hitting bays for year-round comfort, delicious food and beverage, live events, music, hundreds of HDTVs and outstanding hospitality. Bridgestone Golf Named Official Golf Ball Provider of University of Oklahoma Men’s Team

Bridgestone Golf Named Official Golf Ball Provider of University of Oklahoma Men’s Team

Bridgestone Golf – Innovator of premium golf balls, clubs and accessories – is now the official golf ball provider of the University of Oklahoma Men’s Golf Team, which is currently the 4th ranked program in the nation.

The company is providing the Golf Program with custom-logoed versions of its popular Tour B330 and B330-S golf balls to ensure that the best product possible is available for preparation and competition. Each member of the Sooners has undergone Bridgestone’s industry leading ball-fitting analysis to identify the model that maximizes their on-course potential.

“When competing for national titles, it is important to know that our Golf Program has the best product available,” says Ryan Hybl, Oklahoma’s Men’s Golf Head Coach. “This relationship with Bridgestone provides me with full confidence that we are preparing and competing with the best golf balls on the market.”

“Oklahoma Golf has established itself as one of the most competitive teams in the nation,” says Darrell Moy, Sr. Manager of Tour Operations. “It is an honor to work with such a well-respected program and we look forward to watching them compete throughout the season.”

Bridgestone introduced the Tour B330 and B330-S in early 2016 after more than four years of research and development. The catalyst for distance and accuracy gains over leading competitors is the patented TOURcore. Now six percent larger than the prior model, it produces even faster speed and less spin off the driver via Bridgestone’s gradational core formulation. For increased greenside control, both balls wear the breakthrough SlipRes cover, which increases stopping power without the usual negative effects of added driver spin.

In addition to Oklahoma, Bridgestone supplies product in an official and unofficial capacity to a variety of elite college golf programs in every major Division I conference. Bridgestone’s professional staff features 14-time major winner Tiger Woods, FedExCup champion Brandt Snedeker, Olympics bronze medalist Matt Kuchar, Masters winner Fred Couples, three-time major champion Nick Price, recent PGA Tour winner Hudson Swafford, Bryson DeChambeau, and LPGA Tour stars, Paula Creamer and Karrie Webb.

Thistle Golf Club Ranked 14th Best Course in U.S. By GolfAdvisor.com

Thistle Golf Club Ranked 14th Best Course in U.S. By GolfAdvisor.com

Golf Channel’s Travel Portal Ranked Courses Based on 10,000+ Reviews

Sunset Beach, N.C. – Using more than 10,000 user-submitted reviews, Golf Advisor compiled its list of the Top 50 Courses in the United States in 2016, and Thistle Golf Club, one of the Myrtle Beach area’s best layouts, was ranked 14th.
“We work every day to make Thistle a premier golf experience,” said Jamie Roderick, the course’s general manager. “The greatest endorsement you can receive comes from the players who play your course, which is what makes this ranking so gratifying for our entire team. We are thrilled with the honor and will work tirelessly to exceed the expectations of golfers in 2017.”

Golf Advisor is the travel portal for Golf Channel, the game’s leading media outlet.

A 27-hole facility, Thistle is a 4.5-star layout, according to Golf Digest’s Best Places to Play guide. The Tim Cate design is home to three distinct nines – the Cameron, MacKay and Stewart – and greens that are among the smoothest and fastest in the region.

The 15,600-square-foot clubhouse is home to memorabilia from the original Thistle, a nod to the facility’s heritage, that is on display in the clubhouse and it sets the tone for a day that features the best of the game’s past and present. On spring weekends, Thistle even brings in a bagpiper to fill the air with the instrument’s melodic sounds as golfers prepare to play.
The three nines at Thistle each offer a different, yet equally rewarding experience. The Cameron is the most open of the three nines, encouraging players to swing away with the driver but with just enough water to keep them from getting to comfortable. The MacKay nine is a more traditional, Carolina pine tree-lined layout, highlighted by the 526-yard (from the white tees) seventh hole. The Stewart has a true, links feel with rolling fairways framed by mounding and stacked sod bunkers surrounding the greens.

Located just across state line in Sunset Beach, N.C., Thistle is just minutes from downtown Myrtle Beach.
