Hall-of-Famers, major champions to compete July 10-12; televised on Golf Channel

FRENCH LICK, IN – The French Lick Resort and LPGA Tour announced this week on Golf Channel the formation of the first ever Senior LPGA Championship presented by Old National Bank, which will be contested July 10-12, 2017 at The Pete Dye Course at the French Lick Resort in Indiana. The Tour has reached a multi-year deal to both host the tournament and have it televised on Golf Channel.

“French Lick is proud to host such a prestigious event,” said Steve Ferguson, Chairman of the Board of the Cook Group, owners of the French Lick Resort. “We have long supported women’s golf and to now be part of the first major championship for senior women is indeed an honor. We look forward to a great relationship with the LPGA and an outstanding Championship.”

The field of 81 players will feature a collection of past greats in the women’s game including LPGA Hall-of- Famers, current LPGA members and major champions over the age of 45. The 54-hole event will offer a total purse of $600,000. There will be no cut.

The Senior LPGA Championship presented by Old National Bank, comes on the heels of the February announcement by the USGA of the inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open Championship, which will begin in 2018 at Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Ill.

“This is a landmark event for the LPGA because it provides a larger platform to celebrate the legends of the game,” said Mike Whan, LPGA Commissioner. “With the USGA’s recently announced U.S. Senior Women’s Open and now our event, the women that forged the way for the current generation will now have two major championships each year.”

The inaugural Senior LPGA Championship presented by Old National Bank, will take place Monday-Wednesday of U.S. Women’s Open week, which begins on Thursday. The Pete Dye Course is no stranger to hosting premier tournaments including the 2015 Senior PGA Championship, the Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Championship from 2012- 2014, the 2010 PGA Professionals National Championship and the Legends Tour since 2013.

The history of women’s golf at French Lick dates back to 1957 where Louise Suggs captured the French Lick Women’s Open on the historic Donald Ross course. A few years later the LPGA Championship was also brought to the historic site. In 1959 Betsy Rawls won the LPGA major followed by the legendary Mickey Wright winning the title in 1960 also held on the Ross course. In 2013 the resort hosted The Legends Championship on the Pete Dye course and opened up the LPGA Legends Hall of Fame. In 2017 the resort will add a new chapter with these elite and historic players.

Versatile 12-Hole, Par-3 Layout Designed for Fun and Enjoyment

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Dec. 20, 2016 –  Diamante, a 1,500-acre private resort that fronts the Pacific Ocean in Cabo San Lucas, has debuted The Oasis Short Course, a brilliantly conceived 12-hole layout designed by superstar Tiger Woods and TGR Design.

Two years after he unveiled El Cardonal, a playable yet challenging 7,363-yard layout with an “Old California” design motif that marked his architectural debut, Woods, alongside baseball legend Roger Clemens, played the inaugural round on The Oasis Short Course. The versatile design features 12 enticing par 3’s ranging from 41 to 143 yards. The course can also play as a three-hole course featuring a 374-yard par 4, a 143-yard par 3 and a 540-yard par 5. Each layout can be played in about an hour.

The Oasis Short Course occupies the site of the former 12th and 13th holes on the Dunes Course, the club’s internationally-ranked course by Davis Love III. These inland holes, routed around an attractive water feature, were an ideal place to build a family-friendly design that will appeal to golfers at all ability levels, from novices to experts.

“I learned how to play on a short par 3 course in Long Beach, Calif.,” Woods said, noting that the military club where his dad was a member required juniors to be 10 years or older. “When I was a kid, a 100-yard hole for me at Heartwell Golf Course was a driver and a 7-iron, so I can relate to the challenges faced by younger players,” he stated. “Building this course really brought me back to my roots.” Woods said his goal was to design “a fun, playable course that brings people together and brings golfers back to the game.”

Noting that there’s only one forced carry on The Oasis Short Course, Woods said a putter can be used from nearly every tee, as he and Clemens demonstrated during their exhibition round. “My favorite courses are links courses where golfers can use the ground as a friend and an ally,” Tiger explained. “Players here can use the slopes and contours to guide the ball to the target.” Woods, like many other golf industry  leaders, believes too many modern courses are too difficult to play.

“People today don’t have the time (for leisure pursuits) that they used to have,” Woods said at the gala party following the round. “We need the ability to play fast and have it be enjoyable.”

His comments were echoed by Diamante owner Ken Jowdy, who explained that the park-like atmosphere of The Oasis Short Course was conceived as a “green space” for a variety of recreational pursuits, from golf and croquet to beanbag and Frisbee tossing.

“Golf is all about rules and formality, but our new layout is all about having fun,” Jowdy said. “The informal tee boxes and built-in flexibility of the course enable players to play as many holes as they wish. They can also convert a couple of the par 3’s to longer holes. It’s an exciting venue. We’re very pleased with it. We envision lots of afternoon play from golfers following their rounds on the Dunes Course and El Cardonal. We also expect family outings, from mothers and daughters to fathers and sons.”

Jowdy said a nominal fee for a week’s access to The Oasis Short Course will be established for Diamante members and their guests. He added that free club rentals are available to men, women and juniors.

Unlike the Dunes Course and El Cardonal, which are surfaced in paspalum, fast-running Bermudagrass was used to surface The Oasis Short Course from tee to green. “The new short course is a preview of The Oasis Course, a lushly landscaped 18-hole design by Tiger Woods and TGR Design that’s now in the planning stages,” Jowdy stated.

The Oasis Short Course at Diamante is the 15th course to open in Los Cabos, which has been named the ‘Latin America & Caribbean Golf Destination of the Year’ for 2017 by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) in recognition of its exceptional golf courses and unique mountain-desert-ocean ecosystem.

FLORIDA RESORT HAS RECENTLY RENOVATED LOBBY, ONE-BEDROOM SUITES AND MEETING SPACES

PALM COAST, FL – December 6, 2016 – Salamander Hotels & Resorts, the luxury hotel company founded by Sheila C. Johnson, has unveiled restoration plans for The Ocean Course at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida.

The Ocean Course, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design, is famed for its six Atlantic Ocean-hugging holes and thrilling closing stretch named “The Bear Claw.” The extensive restoration work, which is being undertaken in conjunction with Nicklaus Design, includes re-grassing all fairways, greens and rough with the salt-tolerant Platinum Paspalum as well as reconstructing each tee box, bunker and green complex. The course is scheduled to re-open in October 2017, while Hammock Beach’s other championship layout, the highly-rated Conservatory Course, continues to accommodate guest and member play.

The Ocean Course restoration work follows a number of enhancements at Hammock Beach. The resort recently reimagined its grand lobby to now feature beautiful new flooring, contemporary furniture and lighting, and a brand new sushi bar. It also upgraded 75 of its spacious one-bedroom suites, including installation of new carpet, furniture, updated artwork, flat-panel televisions and reconstructed kitchenettes. All 15,000 square feet of Hammock Beach’s indoor meeting and event space were also updated with new carpet, wall coverings and lighting. In addition, the resort has refreshed the décor in its Delfinos Italian restaurant and is currently updating the interior design in its Loggerheads Lounge.

The Ocean Course has been closed since October when high winds and storm surge from Hurricane Matthew caused damage across the majority of its holes. The resort’s owners and management team have taken a long-term view regarding conditioning and have opted to conduct a complete course restoration.

“After numerous expert analyses and recommendations, we determined that a full restoration was best to ensure that The Ocean Course will re-open as one of the finest resort courses in America,” said Terry Bechtold, Hammock Beach Resort’s managing director. “Upon completion, we will be able to offer one of the finest grass surfaces on which a golfer can play.”
