Golf Courses Open at Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run
The tradition continues of installing engraved nameplates in the Champions’ Locker Room, denoting the PGA professional who played in the 2015 PGA Championship

KOHLER, Wis. – April 11, 2016 – Golf season has arrived in Wisconsin and Kohler Co. proudly announces the opening of Major Championship courses Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run. Today, The Irish at Whistling Straits and The Original Championship Course at Blackwolf Run open to the public. The Straits at Whistling Straits as well as the River and Meadow Valleys at Blackwolf Run are slated to open later this month.

The Original Championship Course is available at Blackwolf Run, through April 22. The opportunity to play this course – comprised of the first four and last five holes on the River and back nine on the Meadow Valleys– is a popular experience. The Original Championship Course played host to the 1998 and 2012 U.S. Women’s Open and was the original course at Blackwolf Run until Herb Kohler, Executive Chairman of Kohler Co., and Pete Dye, legendary designer, split the course to create the current River and Meadow Valleys courses.

To commemorate the opening of the 2016 golf season, Whistling Straits recently installed engraved nameplates in the Champions’ Locker Room. The nameplates include each of the 2015 PGA professionals who played last August in the PGA Championship. This unique aspect of the Whistling Straits experience acknowledges the many talented professionals who have played the course – as part of the 2004, 2010 and 2015 PGA Championships and the 2007 U.S. Senior Open – by installing an engraved nameplate on the locker used during the Major.

“Our larger groups always enjoy using the Champions’ Locker Room. It’s easy to get excited to think that you can walk the same path, play the same course and use the same locker as the best professional golfers in the world,” said Mike O’Reilly, head professional at Whistling Straits. “Now, if using the same locker only meant you could score as well as the professional, that’d really be something!”

Installing the engraved nameplates began after the 2004 PGA Championship. There are 27 PGA professionals who have used the same locker at every PGA Championship hosted at The Straits.

Whistling Straits is made up of two links-style courses – The Irish, offering an intriguing mix of links-style dunes and The Straits, offering a rugged lakeside experience. The Straits hosted the 2015 PGA Championship – which was the most profitable Championship in combined ticket and hospitality sales – and will welcome the Ryder Cup in 2020. Kohler is also the home of the highly praised Blackwolf Run, which is made up of two distinct courses – The River and The Meadow Valleys – that are separated by the Sheboygan River. Blackwolf Run was named by Golf Digest as “The Best New Public Course” in 1988 and has hosted Majors such as the 1998 and 2012 U.S. Women’s Open Championships.
