The Ryder Cup is the most spirited golf event in the world. Fans of the European Union and the United States come out in droves and war paint to cheer on their respective squads in the games most heated and viscerally emotional competition. Anything can happen at the Ryder Cup—and it usually does with superstars such as Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson and Justine Rose in the field. Final team rosters won’t be set for a while, but for whoever lands a spot on either team, you can expect a serious fireworks show on and off the course. By the way, the European team has won seven of the last ten Ryder Cups. All eyes are on Rory to bring the Cup back to the EU and Jordan Spieth to turn the tide and bring victory to Team USA. No pressure, though…

Two Great Captains. Two of golf’s most respected Major championship winning golfers, Davis Love III and Darren Clarke, are the captains of the 2016 Ryder Cup teams. The low-key Love, who has Ryder Cup Captain experience (2012 at Medinah C.C.) and a surprise win on the PGA Tour in 2015, brings a calm demeanor and thorough understanding of team golf to the 2016 Ryder Cup Matches. The affable Clarke is the first Northern Irishman to lead Europe against the U.S. He was also vice-captain in the European wins in 2010 and 2012. Both captains are known for their great sportsmanship, competitiveness and admiration for the Ryder Cup.

 Hazeltine National Golf Club.

Located in Chaska, Minnesota (a suburb of Minneapolis), this Robert Trent Jones design (which includes a few tweaks made by his son, Rees Jones), opened for play in 1962 and is consistently heralded among America’s greatest courses.  No stranger to marquee events, Hazeltine has hosted the 1970 and 1991 U.S. Opens, the 2002 PGA Championship and most recently the 2009 PGA Championship where Y.E. Yang upset Tiger Woods. The golf course oozes a traditionally American, parkland-style layout: tree-lined undulating fairways, steep bunkers that closely guard the greens and water hazards strewn throughout the course. Many people comment about Hazeltine’s extreme length (7,642 yards from the Tournament Tees), but it’s the sometimes short and challenging par fours that will be key holes in the Ryder Cup matches. On the back nine, the 352-yard Number 14 hole and 402-yard Number 16 holes promise to be exhilarating places to watch great golf and drink a cold pint.

The Juicy Lucy. Would you really consider visiting the USA without eating one of the area’s best culinary offerings? Arguably, the best hamburgers in the world come from within the United States and in Minneapolis, the best burger around is the Juicy Lucy. The burgers claim to fame is the generous amount of cheese grilled and melted inside the meat, resulting in a heaven-sent, ooey-gooey mess of a meal. As far as where to get one, it depends on who and where you ask. Several local eateries make their own versions of the Juicy Lucy, with Matts Bar and the 5-8 Club both claiming to have invented it. Sounds like enough of a reason to try both, don’t you think? The best bet is to ask a local and get the insider tip on which one is their favorite.

Formerly Head Sports Field Manager for the Kansas City Chiefs, Warnick brings 20-plus years of sports turf industry experience to the SAFE Board of Trustees. During his tenure, he has maintained grounds for NCAA Division I athletic events, U.S. Soccer, concerts and other high-profile events.

Hawaii’s largest Samoan cultural event and a pre-eminent showcase of Samoa’s traditions, the We Are Samoa Festival, is highlighted by two annual events: the World Fireknife Championships and the High School Samoan Cultural Arts Festival. With contestants as young as six years old, the 24th annual World Fireknife Championships brings the most talented fireknife dancers to the PCC during a three-night heated competition for a chance to win the coveted title of World Fireknife Champion.  7)      Lantern Floating Hawaii (May 30)

Every year on Memorial Day, thousands of people gather at Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park to honor ancestors and loved ones who have passed away. At sundown, more than 3,000 candlelit lanterns are set afloat on the ocean, a traditional Buddhist rite originating in Japan. The ceremony serves to honor those who have sacrificed their lives in war, pay respect to ancestors and loved ones who have passed away, and pray for a harmonious and peaceful future.  8)      100th Annual King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade (June 11)
This colorful celebration honors the reign of King Kamehameha, who united the Hawaiian Islands under his rule in 1795. Starting at 9 a.m., a floral parade with traditional pau riders, representing the Hawaiian royal court of each island on horseback, energetic marching bands, decorated floats and much more traverse the streets of Honolulu, from Downtown to Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. This is followed by the festivities of the King Kamehameha Hoolaulea—a street block party filled with Hawaiian entertainment, food booths and local crafts—down  Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The celebration continues into the evening, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Waikiki Shell with the anticipated 100th Parade Celebration Concert, in remembrance of this great alii.

This year marks the 75th commemoration of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the US Navy, National Park Service and Pearl Harbor Historic Sites partners have events planned throughout the year to commemorate this important time in history. The new Pearl Harbor Visitor Center Tour was launched this January and features the USS Arizona Memorial Narrated Tour and admission to USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park. June 4-5, the Pacific Aviation Museum will pay tribute to the 74th anniversary of the Battle of Midway with the 2016 Biggest Little Airshow. The Board of The Renaissance Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Stephen Walker as its new Director of Marketing & Hospitality, with immediate effect.

Prior to this appointment, Stephen was Director of Sales and Marketing at Turnberry, a Luxury Collection Resort, an icon in the world of golf where he led the sales team with responsibility for all marketing, sales and events. Earlier in his career he was International Sales Manager for Scandic Hotels based in London and opened The Dalmahoy Golf & Country back in the early nineties.

With extensive experience in many global markets having worked in this field for over 25 years Stephen has been brought into The Renaissance Club to continue to find new revenue generating sources and to market membership. Following the success of The Renaissance Club’s “One Time Experience”, which offers the opportunity for non-members to experience what this exclusive club has to offer during the golfing season, the club will look for more opportunities to market & distribute this unique programme under Stephen’s stewardship.
