Abaco Club
Abaco Club

January 25, 2016 – Abaco, The Bahamas — The Abaco Club on Winding Bay announced today that longtime member and resident, Darren Clarke, has agreed to serve as its World Ambassador, and to assist in promoting the Club both in its sales and marketing efforts and at special events.

Clarke has been a fixture at the Abaco Club since its opening in 2008 and was married to his wife, Alison, on the club’s extraordinary, 2.5-mile, white sand beach in 2012.  “I love the relaxed atmosphere of this place and the enhancements that have been made to the award-winning course at The Abaco Club,” Clarke said, from his cottage overlooking Winding Bay.  “It’s extraordinarily beautiful, and there’s no place I’d rather spend time, especially with my family. I’m also looking forward to the completion of the state-of-the-art practice facility at the Club,” he added. “I’ve always loved working on my game here prior to The Masters each year, and this new facility is going to be a Tour-quality practice area, the best in the islands.” In addition to enjoying his home at Abaco and being on the beach and golf course, Clarke also has a passion for the world-class bonefishing and sport-fishing opportunities in The Abacos. He recently competed in, and won, the Abaco Club’s bonefishing competition, which took place over the holidays.

The current European Ryder Cup Team Captain, Darren Clarke has had a long and successful professional career.  Originally from Northern Ireland, Clarke plays in PGA Tour, European Tour and other major golf events all around the world.  He has played on the European Ryder Cup team five times and has won 22 tournaments on major tours, including the PGA Tour, Sunshine Tour and Japan Tour.  He won the 2011 Open Championship at Royal St. George’s, along with two World Golf Championships, most notably the 2000 WGC-Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship when he defeated Tiger Woods.

“We are thrilled to have Darren’s support for our efforts to spread the word about The Abaco Club,” said Casey Counseller, General Manager. “As a professional golfer, he appreciates what an outstanding course it is, but Darren also enjoys and makes use of the Club’s other amenities and seems to revel in its congenial atmosphere.  The Abaco Club is a very special place, just as Darren is a very special golfer and person. We couldn’t be more pleased that he is going to help us tell the world more about Abaco.”

The Abaco Club on Winding Bay is one of the world’s most extraordinary clubs. It is a true, international sporting club, with members and residents who appreciate the very best in life and enjoy the ease with which they can have a relaxing and rejuvenating island vacation at Abaco. Southworth Development of Newton, Mass. acquired the Club in December 2014, and since then, members, homeowners and visitors to the Club have seen great improvements in many aspects of the property and club in the months since, including enhancements to its dining outlets, welcome center, the golf course and new practice area, the golf shop, and the beach and its associated water sports offerings.

Since its debut, the Abaco Club has been recognized perennially as the #1 course in The Bahamas by Golfweek magazine, and is a favorite of both professional and amateur golfers. The Club regularly receives glowing reviews from its visiting guests, who seem to enjoy sharing their experiences on websites like TripAdvisor, where they list all the things that make the Club so special.

“We’re very proud of what we’ve achieved since we took ownership of The Abaco Club.  We spent more than $10 million on facility upgrades in 2015, and are investing even more in 2016,” said David Southworth, Founder of Southworth Development. “And we’re very grateful that Darren Clarke has agreed to help us share his impressions of what it’s like to live here and enjoy the Club. It’s wonderful to be able to spend time with him here and to see him enjoying his time here with his family.”

PGA Catalunya Resort retains ‘#1 in Spain’ status

– Top honours in latest Today’s Golfer travel awards –
– Spain’s No.1 & Continental Europe’s No.3 in top100golfcourses.co.uk’s 2106-2017 rankings –
– ‘Best Golf Development Europe’ for second consecutive time –

(PGA Catalunya Resort, Barcelona – January 21, 2016) PGA Catalunya Resort, near Barcelona, has celebrated the start of the 2016 season in style by securing a trio of important accolades that reconfirm its status as home to Spain’s #1 course and one of the best in Europe.

The Stadium Course was voted ‘Best Course’ in Spain by readers of influential UK golf magazine, Today’s Golfer, as part of its annual Travel Awards, and maintained its place at the top of the latest www.Top100GolfCourses.co.uk Spanish ranking – a position it has held since 2012.

The European Tour Destination’s championship layout also retained its number 3 ranking in www.Top100GolfCourses.co.uk‘s 2016-2017 Continental European listing and was featured among the Spanish courses in Golf Digest’s recently announced ‘Best Golf Courses in 206 Countries’ classification, underlining the venue’s standing in European golf.

“It is no surprise PGA Catalunya Resort emerged a handsome – and deserved – winner of Spain’s Best Course category in the latest Today’s Golfer Travel Awards,” commented Today’s Golfer courses editor, Kevin Brown.

“The venue continues to go from strength to strength and, in one of the most keenly-contested sections, the classy Costa Brava resort reigns supreme as the King of Spain.”

These latest accolades follow the venue’s second consecutive International Property Award for ‘Best Golf Development Europe’, which was judged by a high-calibre jury of 70 international property and architecture experts.

David Plana, Chief Executive Officer of PGA Catalunya Resort, added: “2016 is an important year for PGA Catalunya Resort, especially with more new initiatives in the pipeline, but our objective still remains the same, to offer every visitor a truly world class, memorable experience.

“The Today’s Golfer travel accolade is one we are particularly proud of, as it is based entirely on consumer opinion, and we are extremely grateful to everyone who voted for us.”

January 27, 2016, Santa Rosa, CA — Mayacama, Sonoma County’s private golf and residential community, has announced that Head Golf Professional Ted Antonopoulos has been appointed to the PGA of America Rules Committee. The PGA Rules Committee is made up of 35 PGA Members and is responsible for administering the Rules of Golf at all Championships conducted by the PGA of America. Those Championships include the PGA Championship, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, the Senior PGA Championship, the National Club Professional Championship, The Ryder Cup, and several others. In addition to the Association’s Championships, Members of the Rules Committee are also included among the list of special invitees who officiate at The Open Championship, The Masters, The US Open, US Senior Open, The Players Championship, and in 2016 they will be included as part of the officiating crew when Golf returns as an Olympic Sport in the Summer Olympics taking place in Brazil in 2016. Committee Members are also responsible for instructing and/or coordinating the PGA/USGA Rules of Golf Workshops, held at several nationwide locations each year.

The selection process for this prestigious appointment is quite extensive. Qualified candidates must have recorded a minimum score of 92 or better on the PGA/USGA Rules of Golf Exam and must submit a portfolio of experience to the Chairman of the Rules Committee. A Selection Committee then evaluates each rule profile folder, ranking them on a scale of 1-5. This individual ranking system will allow Committee leadership to fairly perform the very difficult task of sorting through extremely qualified professionals who are passionate about the rules of golf.

Ted received his appointment from PGA of American President Derek Sprague and Rules Committee Chairman Ron Hickman.

“Obviously I am thrilled to represent Mayacama Golf Club as part of this prestigious Committee,” Antonopoulos said. “The PGA Rules Committee is a dedicated group of Professionals who have a passion for the game, and I have always been impressed with the way that they conduct themselves and our Championships. It will be an honor to serve on this Committee and I look forward to the opportunity.”

Ted’s first assignment was the National Car Rental Assistant Championship in Port St. Lucie, Florida in late 2015. He will also be coordinating the PGA/USGA Rules of Golf Workshop in Las Vegas in February 2016.

In addition to the PGA of America Rules Committee, Ted is also a Member of the USGA Senior Amateur Committee and has officiated at USGA Championships for the last 5 years. Other assignments have included PGA Tour Qualifying School, USGA Championship Qualifying, American Junior Golf Association’s Wyndham Cup, NCAA Division I and Division II Regional Championships, and of course our very own Mayacama Cup and Annual Championships of Mayacama Golf Club…with the latter being the most pressure-packed of all!

Mayacama is very fortunate to have Ted’s knowledge, experience, and wisdom to ensure that the game remains true to its time-honored traditions.

Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship 2016 Launch - Rider Cup 6
Stenson, Spieth, Fowler and McIlroy GolfBoarding

Golfing superstars gather in the Middle East as the sport

prepares for “game-changing” year

Abu Dhabi, UAE, 19 January 2016: Four of the world’s best golfers today raced into Abu Dhabi and a “game-changing” golfing year on the crest of a wave by trying their hand at the latest sensation sweeping the golf world.

In an all-action start to the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, World Number 1 Jordan Spieth was partnered by World Number 5 and compatriot Rickie Fowler for ‘Team USA’ in a “Rider Cup Desert” challenge against ‘Team Europe’ represented by World Number 3 and four-time runner-up Ulsterman Rory McIlroy and World Number 6, super Swede Henrik Stenson at Abu Dhabi’s ocean-front Saadiyat Beach Golf Club.

GolfBoarding has taken golf by storm in the last twelve months. Co-created by surfing legend and extreme sports pioneer Laird Hamilton, it gives golfers the opportunity to “surf the earth” as they ride the course skateboard style from hole to hole, aiming to make speed of play a thing of the past.

The four players are part of a star-studded field for the $2.7 million “Desert Swing” opener at Abu Dhabi Golf Club National course (January 21-24) teeing off in a year which also hosts the Ryder Cup and sees the sport’s return to the Olympics in Rio.

Spieth, who is making his Arabian debut in the UAE capital, said: “I’ve spoken to Rickie a number of times about it and he said his experience of Abu Dhabi and this event was fantastic. I am really looking forward to playing this week.”

His Excellency Aref Al Awani, General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, which owns the event said:

“We have the biggest names in golf at the championship this year – four of the world’s top six, a raft of young aspiring ‘ones-to-watch’ new-comers and a significant Falcon Trophy challenge from Asia’s best. Every year the championship grows in stature as evidence by the fact that this year our field is stronger than any recent tournament hosted in the region.

“Stars like Jordan, Rory and Rickie belong to an exciting new generation of young and highly talented golfers – players who regularly win golf’s biggest tournaments but also players who do so in a style and grace that inspires the youngest of fans.

“Our Rider Cup desert challenge was a bit of fun – to get the Championship’s entertainment element off to a speedy start. We have significantly upgraded the spectator engagement this year with new activity zones, more prizes and a packed programme of player and sporting star appearances – something for everyone.”

World Number 3 Rory McIlroy commented: “There are many reasons why I always start my golfing season in Abu Dhabi. The quality of the course is always superb, we’re guaranteed great support from the fans and, most importantly, the challenge offered by the strength of field really focuses my mind for the event. I want to find out where my game is early in the season and this is the best place to do it, especially with Jordan and Rickie playing. As I’ve come close to winning here a number of times in the past, I’m always looking to go one step further. In such a big year for golf, a solid start is vital for getting that all-important momentum.”

HSBC Global Head of Sponsorship and Events Giles Morgan said: “As a long term sponsor of the sport, we pride ourselves on opening up the world of golf and this year more than any other it is crucial that we deliver on this. With golf returning to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after a 112 year absence, the Ryder Cup, all four Majors and all four World Golf Championship events, there has never been more at stake. This could be a game-changing year for golf and it all starts here in Abu Dhabi.

“Of course, golf is built on strong traditions but with a new breed of young, stylish golfing superstars like Jordan, Rory and Rickie leading the charge, the sport has a gilt-edged opportunity to welcome a new generation of fans. If we want to attract a new audience we need to innovate and embrace new formats of the game – we know speed of play is a major issue for the sport and the GolfBoard is a pioneering idea that could really make a difference.

Rickie Fowler added: “The past two years have been pivotal in my career. Getting three great Tour wins under my belt and coming so close in the four Majors in 2014 has given me confidence. I’m feeling more comfortable with my game than ever, and I’m looking forward to starting with a tough test against some of my biggest rivals and friends in Abu Dhabi, which I hope will set me up nicely for the season ahead.”

Stenson, a former UAE resident of 10 years who has twice finished second at the tournament, said: “Abu Dhabi is very close to my heart. I’m one of only 12 players to have competed every year in Abu Dhabi since the first event in 2006, and I’ve always enjoyed starting my season here. After two runner-up placings, it’s no secret that I would love to win on the National course.”

The 2016 edition of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship features a superstar line-up, including world number one Jordan Spieth in his Arabian debut, four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy, American hot shot Rickie Fowler, super Swede Henrik Stenson and three-time Abu Dhabi champion Martin Kaymer.

The Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship is owned and presented by Abu Dhabi Sports Council.  Tickets and tailored packages are available via the event’s official website www.abudhabigolfchampionship.com  at AED50 for a daily pass and AED150 for a four-day pass.
