The 2016 Rio Verde Invitational field boasts 17 top women’s college golf teams, including host Western Michigan University and 2015 tournament champion Seton Hall. Also in the field: Akron, Arkansas State, University of Arkansas-Little Rock, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Illinois State, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Missouri State, Northern Arizona, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo, Wichita State and Xavier.

Rio Verde has hosted the tournament since its inception in 2001 on its two 18-hole, par-72 courses – Quail Run and White Wing. Both layouts recently underwent a $6 million renovation by The Lehman Design Group, yet retained their “soft desert” playability and decidedly different design characteristics. Playing to 6,602 yards, Quail Run is traditional and reminiscent of America’s great Midwestern golf venues. White Wing (6,535 yards) sports a slight modern flair, with fairway mounding, open green fronts and deeper bunkering.

Seton Hall won the 2015 Rio Verde Invitational (in March) by four shots over Toledo and Northern Arizona. Teammates Alison Kruse and Erin McClure of Seton Hall shared medalist honors, both shooting a cumulative 54-hole total of 2-over-par 218. Originally known as the “East/West Rio Verde Invitational,” the tournament moved from a 36-hole to a 54-hole format in 2005.

“Western Michigan University is once again pleased to host the annual Rio Verde Tournament,” says Stacy Snider, head coach of the Broncos women’s golf team. “This tournament features several top notch collegiate women’s golf programs and is held at one of the premier golf clubs in the Southwest. The staff at the Rio Verde Country Club has done a great job making this an enjoyable experience for all the golfers and fans as well. We are looking forward to another competitive field this season.”

Visitors of the tournament can stay at Rio Verde through the community’s Discovery Stay Program. Guests can rent private vacation homes and learn about membership opportunities and all the wonderful amenities and exciting activities found at the club.

Centara World Masters – Asia’s Most Popular Tournament For Club Golfers

Centara World Masters – Asia’s Most Popular Tournament for Club Golfers

Hua Hin, Thailand, 7 October 2015 — In two short years, the Centara World Masters Golf Championship in Thailand, has become the biggest tournament for club golfers in Asia. The inaugural tournament attracted 400 golfers and the latest installment in June 2015 attracted a sell-out field of 600 golfers from 23 countries. No other amateur golf tournament attracts golfers from more countries.

The Centara World Masters Golf Championship is a week-long celebration of golf, social and entertainment events in the popular seaside resort town of Hua Hin in Thailand. The event is open to all male and female golfers over the age of 35. Competition is played in 15 divisions based on age and handicap and drawing golfers of a similar age and handicap together is among the event’s great traditions.

Hua Hin, about 2.5 hours south of Bangkok, was awarded Asia’s Best Golf Destination in 2014 and serves up a winning combination for tournament participants. Golfers play Black Mountain, Banyan, Springfield and Majestic Creek – all quality resort course layouts where carts and caddies are standard. Black Mountain is ranked the number one course in Asia and hosts the annual (insert pro tournament here). Banyan was voted (insert award here). Thailand is known as the ‘land of smiles’ and the well-trained and friendly caddies enhance this reputation.

Hua Hin also has an abundance of ideally located accommodations from luxury to more budget options. Host hotel for the tournament is the Centara Grand Beach Resort and Villas Hua Hin. Established in the 1920’s, the resort has modern luxuries while retaining its bygone age of elegance. Taking full advantage of Centara’s beachfront location, the opening night welcome dinner and gala presentation dinners are hosted around the resort pool with the beach and ocean as a stunning backdrop.

Golfers gather each night during the tournament for 19th Hole festivities where tempting Thai cuisine and Chang beer flows and daily golf winners are celebrated.

The tournament also boasts US$30,000 in golf prizes and lucky prize draws for luxury golfing holidays including an all-expenses paid trip to return to the Centara World Masters.

The tournament package is packed with value and personalised touches like a caddy bib, personalised with the players name and country flag. This event has all the trappings and services usually reserved for touring professionals. Centara World Masters participants have been in high praise of the event experience and value.

“On behalf of my husband and I, we would like to congratulate you on another wonderful event. We enjoyed the games, the on course challenges and meeting new friends from around the world. The team were amazing in organising the transport and getting everyone off to a great start at each course. We had a wonderful time and will be back next year.  Have a great year.” — Christine and Michael Marks

The tournament is co-hosted by Australian-based Go Golfing and Golfasian who look after more golfers in Thailand than any other tour operator. The seamless co-ordination of flights, accommodation, transfers and event logistics for 600 plus golfers is among the events notable achievements. In addition to Centara Hotels and Resorts, reputable companies including TaylorMade, Coca-Cola, Tourism Authority of Thailand and beers supplied by Chang are proudly contributing to the future success of the tournament.

The third annual Centara World Masters Golf Championship returns to Hua Hin, Thailand, from 12 to 18 June 2016. For complete event information and to book visit www.thailandworldmasters.com

Myrtle Beach Golf Courses Reopen in Aftermath of Storm

Myrtle Beach Golf Courses Reopen in Aftermath of Storm

Grand Strand Avoids Worst of Storm’s Damage, Welcomes Golfers Back to the Area

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Emerging from the aftermath of a storm that brought record rainfall to South Carolina last weekend, Myrtle Beach area golf courses have reopened all along the Grand Strand.

A 60-mile stretch of Carolinas coastline, the Grand Strand absorbed more than 20 inches of rain in some locales, but the area avoided the worst of the storm’s damage.

Thirty-two courses reopened Tuesday and that number will have nearly tripled by Thursday morning, when nearly every layout will be open in anticipation of a busy fall weekend.

[Full List of Myrtle Beach Area Golf Courses That Have Reopened]

“We are happy to be able to welcome golfers to Myrtle Beach this weekend and throughout the fall,” said Bill Golden, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday president. “We were extremely fortunate to have avoided the extensive damage other parts of the state endured. Even as we get back to the work of helping people enjoy a golf vacation, our thoughts will never be far from our friends throughout the state who are dealing with situations that are much more severe.”

Myrtle Beach golf courses didn’t escape unscathed. Every layout in the area had to deal with standing water and bunker erosion, but when the water receded, most course operators were relieved to find structural damage was minimal.

“We had a lot of water, but we didn’t experience any significant damage,” said Steve Mays, director of sales and marketing for Founders Group International, which operates 22 area courses. “Once the water receded, we were ready to go. Golfers shouldn’t see any adverse effects this weekend and certainly beyond.”

For most of the next week, the Myrtle Beach area is expected to have near perfect weather. High temperatures are forecast to be in upper 70s and low 80s and will be accompanied by a slight breeze, which will help further aide courses in drying out.

“I think players will be pleasantly surprised at the conditions, given what everyone at the beach has gone through,” said Dave Genevro, general manager at Barefoot Resort, home of the four of the area’s premier courses. “I’ve been here 15 years and I saw water in places I’ve never seen it before, but conditions are going to be better than people expect, based on what they saw on TV.”
