Perfectly timed to honor Sept. 11, Special Ops Survivors, a nonprofit organization, will present its annual charity golf tournament. Funds raised will go to help provide support services for surviving spouses of Special Operations military personnel.

SAN DIEGO (Aug. 24, 2015)  Special Ops Survivors—a nonprofit organization exclusively dedicated to serving surviving spouses of active duty Special Operations personnel who have died in combat or training since January 1, 1980—is pleased to announce their annual charity golf tournament will take place on Friday, Sept. 11 at the Del Mar Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

Special Ops Survivors is encouraging all golfers to mark Sept.11 in a meaningful way this year. Together with fellow golfers, they will raise funds to help support surviving military spouses of Special Operations military personnel. The charity event is also open to additional sponsors.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m. with the tournament kicking off at noon. Golfers can play individually for $300 or as a foursome for $1,000. Breakfast will be provided to the golfers along with a box lunch to take on the course. A cocktail reception and awards ceremony will follow at 5:30 p.m.

During the reception, speakers will include:

  • Mary Ellen Bancroft, surviving spouse of Marine Capt. Matthew Bancroft who died Jan. 9, 2002 while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom;
  • John Baca, a former U.S. Army soldier and Vietnam War veteran. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest decoration of the United States Armed Forces, for his actions in combat.

“This is a very special event for our organization,” says Elizabeth Brown, executive director of Special Ops Survivors. “We will honor the day and pay a special tribute to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice and to their surviving spouses. It also raises critical funds to help us meet our mission to embrace and empower surviving spouses.”

New golf course to open on Kangaroo Island

GOLFERS from around the world are expected to flock to a new $30 million course planned for Kangaroo Island in Australia.

Located just off the coast of South Australia, Kangaroo Island is a tourism icon drawing more than 40,000 international visitors every year with the majority coming from Italy, Germany and North America.

Australia’s most famous golfer Greg Norman has been approached regarding the design the 18-hole championship length, Par 72 links-style golf course.

Developer Programmed Turnpoint Pty Ltd, who also recently completed the Cape Wickham Golf Course in Tasmania, hopes to have final approval for the golf course within eight weeks and have ‘tee off’ next year.

The development will include the 6415m long, links-style golf course, dining and function facilities, clubhouse and 70 accommodation suites (180 beds) for tourists.

The 220-hectare site is located on Dudley Peninsula between Pelican Lagoon and Pennington Bay on the eastern end of the 4,405-kilometre-square island. Five free-hold residential allotments, which would be used during Stage 1 of the development to help fund later stages of the development, will also be built.

General manager of Programmed Turnpoint Justin Trott said there was a huge, global appetite for unique golfing experiences.

“Golf destinations are a new tourism market,’’ he said. “People are always looking for unique locations to play the sport.

“With this golf course being located on the coast in a remote area its got the “sizzle’’ to becoming immediately attractive to the market. Playing golf while overlooking the sea, the drama of the sand dunes – it really will be something to behold.

“We are in the very early stages of speaking to golf courses designers, including Greg Norman and we will be looking at some plans in the immediate future.’’

“We have completed the public consultation period and spoken to cultural heritage representatives. We are now in the process of preparing our responses to those discussions.’’

He said a purpose built dam on site, which would only use overflow water from the nearby Middle River, would store all the water needed for the golf course throughout each year.

Kangaroo Island council chief executive officer Andy Boardman said the council expected an extra 22,000 visits a year from tourists as a result of the new golf course.

“Golf tourism is a growing trend in holidays,’’ he said.

“Groups or families are seeking iconic locations to visit and spend two to four nights staying at those destinations.

“We expect it will boost our tourism revenue by around $7 million annually and will be a very strong addition to the tourism aspect of Kangaroo Island.’’

Kangaroo Island’s newest tourism draw is the Kangaroo Island Marathon to be run in September 2015.

The Qualifying School will reach its climax at PGA Catalunya Resort for the eighth successive season when the Girona-based venue, a European Tour Destination, holds the Final Stage from November 14-19, 2015.

PGA Catalunya Resort’s Stadium and Tour courses – co-designed by Neil Coles and Angel Gallardo – will again host the six-round finale of the Qualifying School, which gets underway with the First Stage Section A on September 15.

The award-winning resort first held the Final Stage in 2008 and will continue to play host until at least 2017, having recently extended its existing deal by three years.

Last year’s Qualifying School attracted 924 entrants, with 156 progressing to the Final Stage and 27 ultimately earning their playing privileges on The 2015 European Tour International Schedule.

Notable graduates from the 2014 Qualifying School include Indian Anirban Lahiri, who has gone on to capture two European Tour titles since claiming the 17th card at the Final Stage last November; and England’s Matt Fitzpatrick, currently inside the top 40 in The Race to Dubai thanks chiefly to three top five finishes so far this season.

Atlantic City Is A Sought-After Golf Destination

Bolstered by a majority of the finest golf experiences in New Jersey and unlimited activities away from the course, Atlantic City is fast becoming known as one of the East Coast’s most sought-after destinations.

“Everything (Fream and Dale) have done, they’ve done well,” said general manager Harry Bittner said of the design team. “The whole goal was to build a golf course that was pretty dramatic and different to give people something special — something they will remember. They had a really great piece of land with which to work.”

A bit closer to AC, golfers at Blue Heron Pines Golf Club enjoy the new Tap & Tavern. The name of the new establishment originates from owner Ron Jaworski’s jersey number worn during his long and distinguished NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles, and the friendly new neighborhood tavern features craft beers, an exciting menu and an abundance of large screen televisions

Site of the Jaws Celebrity Golf Challenge, Blue Heron Pines is renowned for having not one, but two replica holes from the aforementioned Pine Valley, the New Jersey icon consistently ranked among the world’s best. Architect Stephen Kay patterned Blue Heron’s No. 14 off Pine Valley’s seventh and he similarly replicated a PV hole on his No. 10 offering.
