Special Ops Survivors Annual Golf Tournament Set for Sept. 11 at Del Mar Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe

Perfectly timed to honor Sept. 11, Special Ops Survivors, a nonprofit organization, will present its annual charity golf tournament. Funds raised will go to help provide support services for surviving spouses of Special Operations military personnel.

SAN DIEGO (Aug. 24, 2015)  Special Ops Survivors—a nonprofit organization exclusively dedicated to serving surviving spouses of active duty Special Operations personnel who have died in combat or training since January 1, 1980—is pleased to announce their annual charity golf tournament will take place on Friday, Sept. 11 at the Del Mar Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

Special Ops Survivors is encouraging all golfers to mark Sept.11 in a meaningful way this year. Together with fellow golfers, they will raise funds to help support surviving military spouses of Special Operations military personnel. The charity event is also open to additional sponsors.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m. with the tournament kicking off at noon. Golfers can play individually for $300 or as a foursome for $1,000. Breakfast will be provided to the golfers along with a box lunch to take on the course. A cocktail reception and awards ceremony will follow at 5:30 p.m.

During the reception, speakers will include:

  • Mary Ellen Bancroft, surviving spouse of Marine Capt. Matthew Bancroft who died Jan. 9, 2002 while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom;
  • John Baca, a former U.S. Army soldier and Vietnam War veteran. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest decoration of the United States Armed Forces, for his actions in combat.

“This is a very special event for our organization,” says Elizabeth Brown, executive director of Special Ops Survivors. “We will honor the day and pay a special tribute to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice and to their surviving spouses. It also raises critical funds to help us meet our mission to embrace and empower surviving spouses.”

Jersey City, NJ, (August 25, 2015) – World No. 1-ranked golfer Jordan Spieth was the special guest to help launch The First Tee Classic at Liberty National Golf Club, a benefit for the non-profit chapters of The First Tee in New Jersey.

One of the most popular young champions in the game, Spieth is in New Jersey fresh off a runner-up finish at the PGA Championship, where the 22-year-old from Dallas, Texas, was looking to add a third major title to his impressive 2015 resume. Spieth, who won both The Masters and U.S. Open Championship and was fourth at the British Open, is competing in The Barclays PGA TOUR event this week at Plainfield Country Club in Edison.

Spieth joined the event hosts and participants at The First Tee Classic at Liberty National for an interactive golf clinic and group discussion.
“More than half the children enrolled are able to participate thanks to financial scholarships provided by our donors,” said Michael Blackwell of The First Tee alliance. “We are so appreciative of our numerous supporters and partners, particularly Paul Fireman and Dan Fireman of Liberty National Golf Club, who made our inaugural event today a resounding success. And I want to extend a very special thanks to Jordan, for making it even more memorable.”

Almost one year ago to the day, and in conjunction with announcing an unprecedented 25-year partnership with the PGA TOUR, the Fireman family, founders of Liberty National Golf Club, committed to donating $5 million to The First Tee over the next five years. Half of this total donation is earmarked specifically for the four local chapters benefiting from the outing at Liberty National.

The non-profit chapters of The First Tee in New Jersey — Essex and Plainfield, Monmouth and Ocean, Raritan Valley and Greater Trenton, are official hosts of the golf outing and fundraiser. Their mission is to positively impact the lives of local young people by providing structured educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

The four chapters reached nearly 64,000 young people in 2014 through programs that seamlessly incorporate The First Tee Nine Core Values and character-building life skills lessons with golf. The chapters have a goal to reach 125,000 young people by 2020, with the support of local individuals and businesses committed to The First Tee’s mission.

New golf course to open on Kangaroo Island

kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island Golf

GOLFERS from around the world are expected to flock to a new $30 million course planned for Kangaroo Island in Australia.

Located just off the coast of South Australia, Kangaroo Island is a tourism icon drawing more than 40,000 international visitors every year with the majority coming from Italy, Germany and North America.

Australia’s most famous golfer Greg Norman has been approached regarding the design the 18-hole championship length, Par 72 links-style golf course.

Developer Programmed Turnpoint Pty Ltd, who also recently completed the Cape Wickham Golf Course in Tasmania, hopes to have final approval for the golf course within eight weeks and have ‘tee off’ next year.

The development will include the 6415m long, links-style golf course, dining and function facilities, clubhouse and 70 accommodation suites (180 beds) for tourists.

The 220-hectare site is located on Dudley Peninsula between Pelican Lagoon and Pennington Bay on the eastern end of the 4,405-kilometre-square island. Five free-hold residential allotments, which would be used during Stage 1 of the development to help fund later stages of the development, will also be built.

General manager of Programmed Turnpoint Justin Trott said there was a huge, global appetite for unique golfing experiences.

“Golf destinations are a new tourism market,’’ he said. “People are always looking for unique locations to play the sport.

“With this golf course being located on the coast in a remote area its got the “sizzle’’ to becoming immediately attractive to the market. Playing golf while overlooking the sea, the drama of the sand dunes – it really will be something to behold.

“We are in the very early stages of speaking to golf courses designers, including Greg Norman and we will be looking at some plans in the immediate future.’’

“We have completed the public consultation period and spoken to cultural heritage representatives. We are now in the process of preparing our responses to those discussions.’’

He said a purpose built dam on site, which would only use overflow water from the nearby Middle River, would store all the water needed for the golf course throughout each year.

Kangaroo Island council chief executive officer Andy Boardman said the council expected an extra 22,000 visits a year from tourists as a result of the new golf course.

“Golf tourism is a growing trend in holidays,’’ he said.

“Groups or families are seeking iconic locations to visit and spend two to four nights staying at those destinations.

“We expect it will boost our tourism revenue by around $7 million annually and will be a very strong addition to the tourism aspect of Kangaroo Island.’’

Kangaroo Island’s newest tourism draw is the Kangaroo Island Marathon to be run in September 2015.

The Sea Pines Resort Announces Fall Reopening for Harbour Town Golf Links

Harbor Town Golf Links
Harbor Town Golf Links

(HILTON HEAD, S.C.) – The Sea Pines Resort – Hilton Head’s most celebrated golf destination and home of the PGA TOUR’s RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing – announces its acclaimed Harbour Town Golf Links will open in late Sept. / early Oct. following a series of agronomic enhancements over the summer.

The Pete Dye-designed masterpiece was closed in early May just after Jim Furyk won the RBC Heritage for the second time. The tee-boxes, fairways and rough have been replaced with Celebration Bermuda grass, the most scientifically-advanced surface used on warm season courses.

Harbour Town’s greens were re-grassed with Tif-Eagle Bermuda, the same turf used on the putting surfaces since 2001. A new irrigation system was also installed with the most advanced technology in water management and control.

MacCurrach Golf Construction – which worked with Dye during the 2001 restoration of Harbour Town – managed the project. The firm also handled last year’s reconstruction work on the resort’s Heron Point layout under Dye’s supervision.

“The enhancements to Harbour Town Golf Links will improve the year-round conditioning and playability of the course,” says Cary Corbitt, Vice President of Sports & Operations. “The stewardship of Pete Dye’s seminal design is important to us as we welcome our guests, members and PGA TOUR players to enjoy one of the world’s most famous courses for many years to come.”

Visitors to The Sea Pines Resort will also discover the new Harbour Town Clubhouse which opened in March. The 55,000-square-foot multi-use structure features a comfortable living room lounge, Links – a first-class American grill with indoor / outdoor seating and sweeping golf course views, signature pro shop and retail display, wrap-around terraces with covered porches, state-of-the-art 4,000-square-foot locker room, and the Heritage Room – an elegant 2,200-square-foot banquet and event room on the top floor.

Qualifying School Final Stage returns to PGA Catalunya Resort

Qualifying School Final Stage returns to PGA Catalunya Resort

The Qualifying School will reach its climax at PGA Catalunya Resort for the eighth successive season when the Girona-based venue, a European Tour Destination, holds the Final Stage from November 14-19, 2015.

PGA Catalunya Resort’s Stadium and Tour courses – co-designed by Neil Coles and Angel Gallardo – will again host the six-round finale of the Qualifying School, which gets underway with the First Stage Section A on September 15.

The award-winning resort first held the Final Stage in 2008 and will continue to play host until at least 2017, having recently extended its existing deal by three years.

Last year’s Qualifying School attracted 924 entrants, with 156 progressing to the Final Stage and 27 ultimately earning their playing privileges on The 2015 European Tour International Schedule.

Notable graduates from the 2014 Qualifying School include Indian Anirban Lahiri, who has gone on to capture two European Tour titles since claiming the 17th card at the Final Stage last November; and England’s Matt Fitzpatrick, currently inside the top 40 in The Race to Dubai thanks chiefly to three top five finishes so far this season.

Julio Delgado, Chief Executive Officer of PGA Catalunya Resort, said: “We feel privileged to host such an accomplished group of players year after year, and strive each time to offer them the best conditions possible so they can focus on what is sure to be a long and stressful week.
“We have continued to fine-tune the Stadium Course, making sure it is always tournament-ready, with fast greens and challenging rough that will provide a great test of golf. David Bataller, our head greenkeeper, has also worked on emphasising the natural contours of the course to accentuate its ‘stadium’ feel, which will undoubtedly add to the atmosphere of the week.”
Mike Stewart, The European Tour’s Qualifying School Director, said: “PGA Catalunya Resort has been a permanent fixture as the venue for the Final Stage of the Qualifying School since 2008, and the decision to extend the agreement to 2017 and hopefully beyond shows how delighted we are with the facilities on offer at the resort.

“With its two magnificent courses, first-class practice facilities and adjoining hotel, I can think of no better venue for our Final Stage; and it is telling that, despite the stressful and intense nature of the week, the players are always extremely complimentary of the venue.

“We are already looking forward to returning to the resort in November and working alongside Julio and his team, who always go out of their way to ensure our visit is a warm one.”

As well as being crowned the 2015 European Golf Resort of the Year by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO), PGA Catalunya Resort was also voted Spain’s Best Course in the inaugural World Golf Awards.

The awards were among the latest in a series of high-profile accolades for the resort, which include being voted Spain’s number one golf course by Top100GolfCourses.co.uk (2012-2015), the Best Golf Development in Europe (2013-2014) at the European Property Awards, and being listed among the World’s Top 100 Golf Courses by one of the UK’s leading golf magazine, Golf World.

Atlantic City Is A Sought-After Golf Destination

Bolstered by a majority of the finest golf experiences in New Jersey and unlimited activities away from the course, Atlantic City is fast becoming known as one of the East Coast’s most sought-after destinations.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (August 2015) — Incorporating the area’s proper parlance, it would be a safe bet to call Atlantic City one of the finest midsized golf destinations east of the Mississippi: A “Shore Thing” if you will.

An easy driving distance from most of the East Coast’s major metropolitan areas, today Atlantic City regularly boasts half or more of the Top 10 New Jersey golf experiences, according to Golfweek magazine, representing a wide range of style, design and history — including golf courses to suit most any budget or expectation regarding conditions and amenities.

Atlantic City has the advantage of being able to offer golfers a wide variety of accommodations — from budget rooms to full-scale suites, casinos, more than 150 restaurants and bars, nightclubs, 24/7 entertainment, beach, boardwalk — literally more off-course activities than any golf destination in the Eastern Time Zone.

Golf history buffs should visit venerable Atlantic City Country Club — most recently restored by renowned designer Tom Doak around its 100th birthday — one of the nation’s great-granddaddies of clubs. ACCC’s rich background alone makes it a bucket list play, as does its spectacular setting along Lakes Bay overlooking the Atlantic City skyline. And the golf experience only improves in 2015 with newly restored greenside bunkers on Holes 4, 6, 8, 12, 15 and 17, a new halfway house and a significant clubhouse renovation.

Atlantic City Country Club has played host to six USGA events, our country’s national championships, and the term “birdie” famously originated there.

Not to be outdone, Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club is the site where Sam Snead’s won his first PGA Championship title and is also currently host to the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer. Brigantine Golf Links is where Harry Vardon and Walter Hagen would tune up their games before heading over to play the British Open.

Meanwhile, Twisted Dune Golf Club stands as quite possibly the most visually striking golf course in the Atlantic City golf arsenal. With its inland links representation, if one was sent blindfolded to any course in the state, this is the one that they’d recognize by its name most readily. That’s because every hole is so dramatic, you have nowhere to turn but in circles.

One local pro described Twisted Dune as the spot where “Phoenix meets Scotland.” Designer Archie Struthers moved two million cubic yards of earth to bring this remarkable course to fruition; creating a true taste of the Scottish Coast, right along the Jersey Shore.

Shore Gate Golf Club is the area’s only layout designed by a California architect firm, that of Ron Fream and David Dale. Though only a couple of miles from the beach, the landscape at Shore Gate is remarkably rolling and diverse. It also has a “vibe,” to put it more Jersey terms, that is similar to the state’s internationally renowned jewel, Pine Valley.

“Everything (Fream and Dale) have done, they’ve done well,” said general manager Harry Bittner said of the design team. “The whole goal was to build a golf course that was pretty dramatic and different to give people something special — something they will remember. They had a really great piece of land with which to work.”

A bit closer to AC, golfers at Blue Heron Pines Golf Club enjoy the new Tap & Tavern. The name of the new establishment originates from owner Ron Jaworski’s jersey number worn during his long and distinguished NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles, and the friendly new neighborhood tavern features craft beers, an exciting menu and an abundance of large screen televisions

Site of the Jaws Celebrity Golf Challenge, Blue Heron Pines is renowned for having not one, but two replica holes from the aforementioned Pine Valley, the New Jersey icon consistently ranked among the world’s best. Architect Stephen Kay patterned Blue Heron’s No. 14 off Pine Valley’s seventh and he similarly replicated a PV hole on his No. 10 offering. Kay also planned Blue Heron as a good walker’s course — more like a private club experience.

A very popular spot for golf groups, Resorts Casino Hotel was the first casino hotel inside of Atlantic City, and the first legal casino outside of Nevada. Buzzing with activity after the recent opening of Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, its LandShark Bar & Grill is the only year-round full-service bar and restaurant on the sand side of the Boardwalk located on prime beach frontage at the site of the Old Steeplechase Pier. Resorts also features the world-class Gallagher’s Steakhouse.

Another golfer mainstay, Tropicana Atlantic City completed a recent $50 million renovation. The revitalization includes far-reaching upgrades to its North Tower hotel rooms, a completely revamped casino featuring new games, an all-new AtlantiCare LifeCenter Fitness center and the spectacular must-see Tropicana Multimedia Light and Sound Show.

“From the vibrant and exciting multimedia light and sound show on the boardwalk façade to the elegant upgrades we’ve made to the casino floor, we’ve taken the guest experience to a new level,” said General Manager Steve Callender. “We’ve even decided to introduce a brand new resort logo.”

In its first major renovation since 2008, early last year Bally’s Atlantic City unveiled its $5.6 million renovation and reconfiguration project to the casino floor. The overhaul included fresh carpeting throughout the gaming area, new chairs at table games and mirrored accents throughout the casino.
